IF YOU DON’T MIND!!!!

Let’s talk about bad habits and negative behavioural patterns, things that just dont work for our higher good! Chances are we all have a bad habit or two, and if you’ve ever tried to quit a bad habit, you know how tough that can be to accomplish.

They say (whoever they are!!??) it takes 6 weeks to make and break a habit… Well, I call bullshit!!

Im struggling with breaking my negative thought pattern, one that habitually jumps to thoughts of suicide when i am going through a hard time. I have been trying to break this habit for 2 years since my last and final attempt at suicide in 2019… so 6 weeks, my ass!!

There are alot of tools to help us quit things, for example those of us who’ve quit smoking may have sought out hypnosis therapy, nail biters might have enlisted in buying that disgusting tasting nail polish to help stop biting, and drug addicts may have joined a support group such as Narcotics Anonymous to help assist with stopping their deadly habit of addiction.

But what if we had access to tools to break bad habits and/or negative habitual behaviours within ourselves?

Well, it turns out we do!!! I am sure you have heard of this before, it’s called Mindfulness. This is a conscious practice of self awareness which can help stop negative habits and patterns of negative behaviour.

Practicing mindfulness has to take personal commitment along with an active involvement with one’s own self betterment, you can’t just sit back and hope things will change with personal awareness; active practice at creating this change is essential. Just like improving external aspects of your life, the more we practise the better we become at something, for example playing the guitar or riding a bike. Well, the same goes for practicing mindfulness, the more we practise, the easier we find it becomes.

I am practicing mindfulness at present in the hopes toi hush my inner critic, and I am finding that this long time affair with my negative self talk is taking a lot of practice. But the more I remember to practice replacing those negative thoughts with positive ones, I find ever so slowly I can witness change as my internal abuse begins to quieten. My 38 year old habit of hateful self-critic is beginning to change after 2 years of relatively consistent practice of mindfulness.

So currently I am learning and practising what seems to be apparent, that in order to break my pattern of abusive thoughts, I firstly have to be aware that it’s happening, be MINDFUL, then i have got to jump on it, get present, be present in my headspace, and then take steps to change my habitual negative thought pattern, for example saying “no i am not a failure, i am happy and healthy”.

It is fucking exhausting, but ultimately rewarding, knowing that by being mindful of my stinking thinking and practising changing the habitm will only build a healthier self internally, and this healthier internal self will spread to my external environment too, a win win!

Mindfulness shows us what’s going on at a given moment, so we can assess our actions and thoughts and let go of bad habits and negative behavioural patterns and form positive and healthier new ones.

So go on and try being mindful. Mindfulness involves being curious about what’s going on, which can be a rewarding experience for us as a human being in this human experience.
